While demographers aren’t exactly sure when the world’s population will hit the much discussed 7 billion mark, the United Nations use today to symbolically mark the milestone.
Countries around the world joined in celebrating the landmark, some with ceremonies for newborns that represent the milestone and others issuing warnings. Meanwhile, last Wednesday the United Nations Population Fund, an international development agency that promotes the right of every person to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity, released a report detailing the achievements and setbacks faced by an ever-crowded world. Based on their report, “The State of the World Population 2011”, how the world reacts to hitting this milestone and moving forward will determine whether we share a prosperous future or one marked by inequalities.
