The turkey has been cooked, Thanksgiving dinner has been eaten and the Christmas shopping frenzy has officially begun. So, as the dust settles on Cyber Monday, how did this Black Friday weekend measure up?
Well, let’s start with the record breaking weekend sales. A National Retail Federation survey on Sunday found that a record 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites over "Black Friday" weekend, up from 212 million last year. The total spending for the weekend reached an approximate $52.4 billion versus $45 billion spent during the same amount of time last year. Where was everyone shopping? According to the National Retail Federation, nearly half of the shoppers surveyed visited department stores, with about 38% percent of shoppers also visiting discount retailers and a little over 30% visiting electronic stores...

“First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. Now, there's the 2nd annual Small Business Saturday, the day people support small businesses. Pledge to Shop Small on November 26th. If millions of Americans shop small, it will be huge,” states American Express.
As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I couldn’t agree more and I have officially taken the pledge to shop small this Saturday. Why shop small? What’s in it for you? Well, it’s more than a warm and fuzzy feeling that will fade away when you leave the store. It’s an affirmative action to make sure that contribute to the stores that dot your local Main St, not your local Wal-Mart. It’s an action to say to your business neighbor that you want their lights on and their doors open. Too often you drive through a town to see half the storefronts boarded up. Well, Small Business Saturday is your way to not only start your Christmas shopping but support your local economy...

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to talk about the two different categories I’ve noticed that people are falling into this week; those who wait all year for Black Friday shopping deals, and those who plan on sleeping late and not getting to the stores at all. The sales have gotten more intense in the last several year, with special deals starting earlier and earlier and people lining up overnight to make sure they catch an item that may be limited to a specific quantity...
