Miller Lite recently launched a “punch top can” version of its beer which has an easily-perforated top which when punctured, allows air to flow into the can as the beer flows out into your mouth. Some may be wondering what the big deal is. Well for those unfamiliar with the term “shotgunning,” this process makes it possible to easily consume a beverage, beer in this case, in less than 3 seconds. It is usually practiced as a form of drinking game and is especially popular among college students. Perhaps now, with this new found knowledge, it may be easier to see how this may be considered controversial...

I recently read an article on SmallBizTrends.com, 8 Steps to Take Your Brick and Mortar Business Online written by Tyler Garns, Director of Marketing for Infusionsoft. I decided to rate one of my companies, Advantage Payroll Services, against the 8 steps they suggest to follow to ensure your company has a significant presence online.
Here’s how Advantage stacks up:
1. Get Found- Check! Tyler suggests list your business listed in Google places, industry directories, local directories and more. If you Google Advantage Payroll Services Long Island, you’ll see us clearly listed on the map. If you click the map, you’ll see our logo comes up in the information box. We’re also listed on multiple local websites and we have a profile for our branch on LinkedIn...

When Facebook was introduced in 2004 it was available only to college students and shared only basic information. Then the “Wall” was added to open communication between Facebook users. In 2005, the “Photos” application was added. Finally in 2006, Facebook was opened to the general public and the social media craze took off...

Social media is one of the most important marketing tools your business can have, but it can quickly become overwhelming – if you have multiple business ventures or even just a personal profile and a business page, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of posts, tags, pictures, videos, and more. How can you keep track of postings and comments without letting your business page invade your life?

Overworked? It may be time to recharge your batteries.
One of the biggest and most common mistakes that small business owners make is failing to delegate. They carry the responsibility of the entire company on their shoulders, attempting to be involved in every decision at every level whether it’s customer service, marketing, sales, accounts payable while email piles up in their inbox… the list goes on. It’s easy to get snagged up in the little stuff on a daily basis, leaving less time to concentrate on actually running the company. Especially in these economic times, business owners are overcompensating, trying to do more with less resources. The result of burning the candles at both ends? Burning out.

I’m a big advocate of thinking outside the box. One of my mantra is to differentiate your brand in the marketplace or die. A bit harsh, I know, but it gets my point across. You have to find a way to distinguish your brand from your competitors or face being forever lumped in with the competition by your prospects. I’ve done my best in the past to come up with unique, slightly irreverent ways to brand one of my companies from my competitors; from offering one-point-of-contact customer service to cheeky postcard campaigns (one of which was so popular Newsday re-ran it in their newspaper) I have worked to make Advantage Payroll recognizable...
